Perry County Engineer DeAndrae Kimbrough, with his wife, chaperoned a group of young men from the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the Jack and Jill Foundation throughout the Black Belt on Sunday, March 5.
The organization, Jack and Jill of America, Inc., is centered on instilling leadership among African American youths through variety of cultural experiences. These educational opportunities are meant to expand knowledge and strengthen communities.
Kimbrough took the group to Selma for the Bridge Crossing Jubilee marking 58 years since Bloody Sunday in 1965. Afterwards, the group toured Perry County along with Main Street Marion. Among the sites visited were the Scott Place near Heiberger, the birthplace of Coretta Scott King and the site of Jimmie Lee Jackson’s shooting at the former location of Mack’s Cafe, behind Zion Methodist Church in downtown Marion.
