The Marion-Perry County Library’s Summer Reading Program for 2023 has seen great attendance and participation this year. With a slate of reading and activities to engage local youth, the library has more in store for the month of June.
Yesterday (Wednesday, June 21), Sutton Moore Gibbs, a soil conservationist in Perry County, came to discuss her line of work with participating youth during their afternoon session. On Tuesday, June 20, Jamie Lee Steenkamp of BDA Farms read from the children’s book, The Little Regenerative Farmer, accompanied by special guest: Tippy, a bottle lamb from BDA Farms. Steenkamp spent the rest of the morning hour teaching the youth about agriculture and animal husbandry. The Tuesday afternoon session was hosted by Carmen Coleman, who has been encouraging loved ones to stay with students for a session dubbed “Kids & Kin.” There, participants can enjoy a reading in the company of their loved ones.
Last week, youth met with Officer Katie Brown, Game Warden, for informational segments on game hunting and gun safety, which included a demonstration with non-shooting guns. Mary Catherine McGill guided children through painting their own bookmarks, along with Carmen Coleman’s regular “Kids & Kin” program. Both Coleman and McGill opened the summer reading program with such activities as a petting zoo of local farm animals, lessons on planting, snare drum demonstrations, and painting sessions.
