Shelton State Community College’s (SSCC) first cohort of practical nursing (PN) students at Bibb Medical Center (BMC) will receive their nursing pins and graduate in commencement ceremonies on Thursday, August 3, and Friday, August 4.
The cohort of nine (9) is the first to complete the PN program at BMC in Centreville, Alabama. SSCC and BMC announced a partnership in 2022 designed to prepare nurses and strengthen the West Alabama workforce. The program began last fall.
The cohort attended classes at a newly renovated clinical space at BMC. They also received financial assistance to cover tuition, books, fees, and other expenses. After receiving their diplomas this week, cohort members will fulfill a two (2) year commitment to work as practical nurses at BMC.
“We are absolutely thrilled about the success of our PN students and the partnership with BMC,” said Dr. Chris Cox, SSCC’s president. “We now have a talented, skilled group of nurses who will join the staff at BMC to provide vital care for the people of Centreville, and they can do so thanks to this invaluable arrangement.”
Increasing the number of skilled nurses is a priority for both SSCC and BMC.
“The need for caregivers has never been greater, and we are indebted to this inaugural class for trusting us and this new endeavor,” said Joseph M. Marchant, President/CEO of BMC. “I’m proud Shelton State Community College has embraced this project and look forward to this continued partnership and its impact on the workforce shortages in our region.”
A nursing pinning ceremony will be held Thursday, August 3, at 6:00 p.m. Commencement exercises will take place Friday, August 4, at 9:00 a.m. for Technical Programs and 11:00 a.m. for Academic and Health Programs. All ceremonies will be held in the Martin Campus gymnasium.
