Marion Mayor Dexter Hinton announced to the room on Monda night that the night’s scheduled city council meeting would have to be rescheduled due to lack of a quorum.
By law, a majority of members of the council, or three of the five members, must be present in order to hold an official meeting. No members of Marion’s city council showed up that night.
Reportedly, Councilmembers Pearson, Arrington, and Jackson all had circumstances preventing them from attending that night and had informed city hall they would not be there.
The council had a full agenda set for the evenining, including discussions of the city’s proposed budget for the coming year as well as a multi-million dollar water project up for discussion.
Both issues were not without controversy, with councilmembers expressing frustration at the budget process during the council’s last meeting and members of the public skeptical about a proposed rate increase that would accompany the water system improvement funds.
The council’s regularly scheduled meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month at 6:00 p.m. at Marion City Hall.
