Marion Police Chief Tony Bufford has reportedly tendered his resignation from the position, according to people with knowledge of the situation.
Bufford, who had originally served the city as chief beginning in the early 2000s, returned to the position a few years ago at the request of the mayor and council.
Bufford’s last day in the position would reportedly be Friday. The next meeting of Marion’s City Council is set for Monday, August 5. The council’s second scheduled July meeting, set for Monday, the 15th, was postponed and then canceled.
Regular city council meetings are held on the first and third Mondays of each month.
Because the position of police chief is a department head, Bufford’s replacement will have to be put to a vote of the council at a future meeting. It was not clear as of press time if the city had named an interim chief to lead the department in the meantime.
