Eighteen-year-old Mikell Craig of Selma has been charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting death of 18-yearold Josh Towns, a Perry County resident. Craig was arrested in Dallas County on Friday, July 19 and is currently being held without bond pending an Aniah’s Law hearing.
According to court records, Towns was found slumped over in a vehicle near the entrance of Pine Glenn Estates at approximately 11:00 PM on Thursday, July 18. The vehicle, identified as a black Nissan Armada, was discovered with Towns inside, having suffered gunshot wounds.
The arrest warrant and complaint, filed on July 22, 2024, detail that Craig is accused of intentionally causing Towns’ death by shooting him with a handgun while Towns was in the vehicle. The charges were filed under Alabama Code 13A-5-40(a)(17), which classifies the offense as capital murder involving a deadly weapon fired into an occupied vehicle.
Craig’s attorney filed a motion to set a reasonable bond, arguing that Craig is entitled to bail under the Alabama Rules of Criminal Procedure on July 23.
Craig’s Aniah’s Law hearing, which will determine whether he can be held without bail, has not yet been scheduled.
