George Charles Williams

George Charles Williams, age 93, of Marion, died on November 18, 2024. Born June 1, 1931 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, George was the son of a Methodist minister. After moving frequently during his childhood, his family settled in Tuscaloosa, where George graduated from Tuscaloosa County High School (1949) and earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry (1961) from The University of Alabama. It was there where he met his wife, Martha Whitehead Williams, whom he married in 1955.

A beloved chemistry professor, known for his sharp mind, patience, and unwavering dedication to his students, Dr. Williams began his teaching career at the University of Alabama and University of Mississippi before joining the faculty at Judson College in 1966.

During his tenure at Judson, Dr.Williams nurtured generations of “Judson girls” who pursued careers in healthcare and other fields in which they could make a difference. He served as chair of the science division from 1970- 2013 and was the first recipient of the Mary Gibson Thompson Award in 1977, which he was awarded three more times. In 1986, he was named the inaugural occupant of the Leslie R. Armstrong Chair of Applied Science. He also received the Lula and Alton Holley Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. In 2015, he was named Distinguished Professor in recognition of his 49 years of exemplary service, a testament to his dedication to Judson College and its students— a commitment he maintained until the college closed in 2021.

Beyond the classroom, George was a man of many talents and interests, driven by boundless energy, curiosity, and kindness. Always ready to help-whether with home and car repairs, a building project, or mentoring students- he shared his time generously with others. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes. On Sunday mornings, he baked bread, cinnamon rolls and pizza, which he shared with friends, neighbors and students. George and his wife, Martha, created a warm, welcoming home, often hosting students and friends for meals. He loved his daughters dearly and adored his grandchildren, always supporting them by attending their events and celebrating their achievements over the years.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan Winston (Danny) and Mary Williams (Fred Wagner), and his grandchildren, Wells Frederic Wagner and Mary Elisa Wagner. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl H. Williams (1973) and Blanche Williams (1975); his brothers, Carl J. Williams (1997) and Frank T. W. Williams (1999); and his beloved wife of 55 years, Martha Williams (2010).

A celebration of George’s life will be on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at 2 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham with the Rev. Julie Conrady presiding. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
