The Running Rams track and field team participated in the Wetumpka Speed Meet on April 22, 2023. The women’s team showed impressive performance and secured the 4th position out of 17 teams. Meanwhile, the men’s team achieved a commendable 6th place.
Several athletes from the Running Rams stood out in their respective events, earning valuable team points. Antashay Wilson finished 6th in the 100M, while Asia Clemons secured 7th place in the 100M and 4th place in the long jump. Zy’Tashia Moore showcased her skills by finishing 4th in the middle school 100M and an impressive 2nd place in the middle school 300 hurdles. Brianna Webb secured 5th place in the middle school 100M and an outstanding 2nd place in the middle school 100 hurdles. Yasmine Murphy secured 6th place in the middle school 200M and 3rd place in the middle school 300 hurdles. Le’Naya Essex demonstrated her versatility by finishing 3rd in the 400M, 3rd in the triple jump, and 3rd in the long jump, with a new school record of 15 feet and 6 inches in the long jump. Kelashia Shelton showcased her prowess by winning the middle school 400M. LaChelsea Moore showcased her skills by securing 7th place in the discus, an impressive 2nd place in the javelin, and 3rd place in the shot put. Tricia Suttle won the javelin and secured 4th place in the shot put, setting a new school record with a javelin throw of 101 feet and 7 inches. Alivya Tobin secured 5th place in the javelin. The women’s 4x100m relay team displayed a commendable performance and secured 6th place.
On the men’s side, Jeremiah Kynard finished 5th in the 100 hurdles, while Kingston Hinton secured 6th place in the same event. Markavian Perkins finished 8th in the 100 hurdles, Omarion Rutledge secured 7th place in the 200m, and Michael Essex finished 8th in the 300 hurdles. Jamarion Essex showcased his talent by winning the middle school 800m. Tyler Billingsley secured 5th place in the discus, while Johnny Hudson finished 7th in the discus and 5th in the shot put. Jarius Smith displayed his exceptional abilities by winning the high jump, securing 2nd place in the long jump, and winning the triple jump. Deldrick Shelton secured an impressive 2nd place in the high jump and 3rd place in the long jump. The men’s 4x100m relay team displayed commendable effort and secured 8th place.
The Running Rams will now gear up for the upcoming competition at Northridge High School on April 28th and 29th, where they will be competing against all 2A Section 2 schools. Athletes who secure a top 5 position in their events or a top 3 position in the relay events will have the opportunity to move on to the state championship on May 5th and 6th.
