Sewell will join local and postal officials for post office renaming, dedication Feb. 28

On Friday, February 28, at 11:00 a.m. CST, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) will join local and state officials, postal representatives, family members, and friends to celebrate the dedication of the Marion Post Office in honor of the late civil rights leader Albert Turner Sr.

The renaming was made possible through legislation introduced by Rep. Sewell, which passed unanimously in both the U.S. House and Senate before being signed into law on January 4, 2025. The effort received full support from Alabama’s congressional delegation in recognition of Turner’s lifelong contributions to the civil rights movement.

Turner, a Perry County native, was a close advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and played a key role in the historic Selma to Montgomery marches. He remained a dedicated advocate for voting rights throughout his life, working to expand ballot access for Black voters in Alabama.

The dedication ceremony will take place at the Perry County Courthouse in Marion. Speakers at the event will include Rep. Sewell, Perry County Commission Chairman Albert Turner Jr., Evelyn Turner, and several state and postal officials.
